The Prophets by Robert Jones, Jr.

The debut novel from Robert Jones, Jr. buds as a love story of two enslaved Black men, fully blooming into a spiritual, lyrical and historical novel of pain, relationship and determination.

Against the daily hellscape of slavery, rape, murder and demoralization, Isaiah and Samuel are able to create some semblance of a safe space, where they can be each other’s, where they can express their love each other deeply and honestly. Others have been aware of their relationship for some time, adopting a curious, cautious and somewhat protective stance of the two young men. Yet, a series of events starts to alter perceptions, and the two young men find themselves the focus of disharmony.

Inspired by Baldwin, Morrison and others, The Prophet is exquisite, a story of love and hope that is both historical and contemporarily applicable. Robert Jones, Jr. took years to craft this debut work that is sensuous yet rough, harrowing and beautiful in its intimacy and deprivation; a testament to the devotion of a master to his craft.
