Collected Works Bookstore and Searchlight New Mexico are thrilled to engage in a community collaboration to bring important and relevant conversation to our city. Over the course of 2023, in three conversations, Searchlight New Mexico will highlight journalists' stories related to current newsworthy subject matter. Save the dates for the third and final conversation, November 13.
Joshua Bowling’s most recent article for Searchlight brings to light troublesome details about the state of New Mexico’s juvenile justice institutions, where children as young as 12 are routinely strip-searched, spend weeks in cells without sinks and toilets, and miss out on family visits due to massive understaffing.
Following publication of the story, the Governor removed Albino Garcia from his seat on the statewide Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee. Garcia said Lujan Grisham’s decision was a disappointing reminder of the flaws in New Mexico’s juvenile justice system: “This is what happens when you speak truth to power.”
