The Santa Fe Youth Poet Laureate Program aims to identify youth writers and leaders who are committed to civic and community engagement, poetry and performances, human relations, diversity and education.

About the Event

Collected Works Bookstore is honored to host the Crowning Celebration of the next Santa Fe Youth Poet Laureate in collaboration with The Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry. Each of the five finalists will read a poem, followed by the announcement of the winner.

The 2020 Finalists (in alphabetical order):

Artemisio Romero y Carver; 

Artemisio Romero is a political organizer, poet, and visual artist who works in and with nonprofits, political representatives, and galleries to advocate for the rights of the marginalized.  

Aviva Nathan 

Aviva is a freshman at Santa Fe Prep. She's currently working on a zine which combines her favorite mediums of expression- poetry, prose, photography and drawings. She takes inspiration from the natural world, cycles, dreams and interpersonal relationships. 

Emma Lawrence 

Emma Lawrence is a graduating senior at Santa Fe Prep. She has been passionate about writing poetry throughout her high school career - beginning with Spoken Word Club in 9th grade, continuing on to take a Creative Writing course in my junior year, and finally exploring journalism with Generation Next, the teen page of the Santa Fe New Mexican, in her junior and senior year. Her favorite poets include Aja Monet, Audre Lorde, and Adrienne Rich. She also loves to dance ballet, jazz, and modern styles, and studies at the National Dance Institute of NM. She is very excited to be considered for this honor, and extends her thanks to the Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry! 

Maggie Rittmeyer

Maggie is currently a junior at the Academy for Technology and the Classics.

Oz Leshem

Oz goes to the New Mexico School for the Arts and is a freshman in the inaugural/first class of the Creative Writing department at the school. Originally from Taos, he discovered his passion for poetry and writing at the end of 2018 when he started getting into hip hop/rap music and since then has had an extremely deep appreciation for words.
