About the Event

In this latest collection of photographs taken over the last 45 years, Joan Myers turns our conception of western landscapes and the life contained within them upside down, revealing the changes the region has undergone over the last half-century. Her perspective is at once elegiac and ironic, capturing the myth and reality of the West, its shaping and appropriation by Hollywood, popular culture, and the ever-present, but fracturing American dream. The book includes an essay by Lucy Lippard.

Joan Myers has been taking photographs for more than thirty years, exploring the relationships between people and the land. Her highly acclaimed work has been the focus of five books, including Salt Dreams: Land and Water in Low-Down California and Pie Town Woman, three Smithsonian exhibitions, and numerous solo and group shows.
