The book traces the journey of descendants of poor Jewish immigrants from Russia, whose struggles and resilience paved the way for Lawrence Berk (1908–1995) and his son Lee to realize their own version of the American dream. In 1945, Lawrence founded a small one-room studio in Boston’s Back Bay, which became the Berklee School of Music, the first college to embrace jazz when other institutions rejected it. His entrepreneurial vision set the stage for what would become a groundbreaking force in music education.
