In her debut, prize winning poetry collection Refugia Kyce Bello ponders what it means to inhabit a particular place at a time of enormous disruption, witnessing a beloved landscape as it gives way to “something other and unknown / growing beyond us.” Ultimately an exploration ofresilience, Refugia brings to life the author’s home ground in Northern New Mexico and carefully observes the shifting landscape in parallel with inter-generational cycles of renewal and loss. 

In Santee Frazier’s second poetry collection, Aurum, the language and structure never strays from its dedication to revealing the prominent reality of Native people being marginalized and discarded in the wake of industrial progress. While uncovering different forms of oppression that estrange Native Americans from their own land, these poems explore the raw and disturbing aspects of living in the wastelands of contemporary America. Frazier has crafted a wrought-iron collection of poetry that never shies away from a truth that America often attempts to ignore.
