About the Event
Allen Ogard was born in the small northwestern Minnesota town of Ada where he spent grade school and high school dabbling in making photos in a makeshift darkroom. He attended St. Olaf College and the University of Chicago for graduate school for a degree in inorganic chemistry, and worked for 30+ years in research as a nuclear chemist at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory.
After retiring in 1993 he took up studying Photography, Media Arts, and Printmaking as a student at the Santa Fe Community College in the School of Arts, Design, and Media Arts. Currently he is using homemade pinhole cameras, which have no lens, to create his works. Being a scientist, his interest in these art studies tends towards understanding the science involved in "seeing" and "light". He hopes that when viewers look at his work they say more than "I like it" or "it's pretty,"
but instead question what is happening in the photograph and why do they look different from
what they see in nature or what they produce in their film or digital cameras?
