Natalie Goldberg - The True Secret of Writing

04/16/2013 6:00 pm
America/Denver

The evening will feature Natalie Goldberg in conversation with Joan Halifax Roshi. Ms. Goldberg will read from her newest book The True Secret of Writing: Connecting Life with Language, followed by a conversation with Buddhist teacher and Zen priest Joan Halifax. The book presents a whole new slant on writing that she developed since the publication of her classic "Writing Down the Bones". True Secret workshops have been limited until now to small, intensive groups at a remote center in the rural Southwest. Ms. Goldberg makes her popular seminar available to any reader. The capstone to forty years of teaching, “The True Secret of Writing” is her Zen boot camp, her legacy teaching. Stories of Ms. Goldberg's own search for truth and clarity and her students’ breakthroughs and insights give moving testament to how brilliantly her unique, tough-love, method works. Beautiful homages to the work of other great teachers and observers of mind, life, and love provide further secrets and inspiration to which readers will return again and again.

Natalie Goldberg has taught writing seminars for thirty years and is the author of "Writing Down The Bones: Freeing The Writer Within", which broke open the world of creativity and started a revolution in writing practice. Since then she has written nine other books, including the novel "Banana Rose". She is also a painter with watercolors exhibited at Ernesto Mayans Gallery. "Top of My Lungs" contains forty poems, twenty of her paintings in color and an essay, “How Poetry Saved My Life.” Some of her more recent books are "The Great Failure: My Unexpected Path to Truth" and "Old Friend from Far Away: The Practice of Writing Memoir".

Joan Halifax Roshi is a Buddhist teacher, Zen priest, anthropologist, and author. She is Founder, Abbot, and Head Teacher of Upaya Zen Center, a Buddhist monastery in Santa Fe. She has written several books, including "Being With Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Presence of Death" and "Seeing Inside", a selection of her compelling and heartfelt photographs and an essay on her experience of seeing.
