Collected Works presents Albuquerque author T. Zane Reeves, Ph.D. for a reading of his latest book, Shoes Along the Danube.  Based on a true story, the book follows the lives for two Hungarian families, the Rézlers and the Földes, one gentile and the other Jewish, through three decades.  Reeves will be presenting in conversation with Billie Blair, President of the Santa Fe Community Foundation.

Shoes Along the Danube begins in pre-World War II Budapest, as Hungary allies with Nazi Germany.  The story builds through the siege of Budapest, the Russian occupation of Hungary, and separation by exile.  Throughout this tumultuous period, Julius Rézler is a rising star among Budapest academics who refuses to compromise his integrity by leaving the country. His American half-brother, Francis, is a diplomat helping democratic Hungarians fight Nazis, and later organizes covert activities against the communists. Agnes Földes is a Jewish woman who fights to maintain her dignity during the Holocaust.

Bryan Dawson, Executive Chairman of the American Hungarian Federation, calls Shoes Along the Danube "a fascinating, honest look at lives intertwined with the history unfolding around them...  [It] is a most fitting allegory for all those that left their lives behind."

T. Zane Reeves, Ph.D. taught at Pepperdine University and California State University, Dominquez Hills, before moving to the University of New Mexico.  He frequently visits Hungary, where he is a board member of the Julius Rezler foundation in Budapest.  His six published titles include From Budapest to Albuquerque: The American Life of Julius Rezler.

As part of the Shared Reading Series, Collected Works Bookstore features Daniel R. Cillis and Rudy Apodaca for a presentation of their latest books.

Daniel R. Cillis' historical novel Statehood of Affairs was released just in time for the New Mexico Statehood Centennial.  In 1911, New Mexico found itself at the center of a vicious international controversy that threatened its proposed statehood.  In Statehood of Affairs, the unjust commitment of a woman to an insane asylum reveals a plot to find the lost Article X of the Treaty of Mesilla.  Dubbed the Revert Document, Article X could endanger New Mexico's proposed membership in the United States of America. The rising tensions between the United States and Mexico are framed in the human stories of two rival sisters, and the love between a statehood delegate and his sweetheart on the other side of the border.

Rudy Apodaca's latest novel A Rare Thing follows the story of Javier Jiminez and his father Nicolas: men broken by war, resurrected in family, and illuminated in hope.  In the small New Mexico town of San Carlos in the 1950s and 1960s, the motherless Javier finds himself forced into an early manhood by the shortcomings of his alcoholic father, a Korean War veteran.  Through first love, loss, and the search for a suitable home, Javier discovers the depth and power of forgiveness.  The El Paso Times notes, "Like a fine salsa, A Rare Thing is infused with real gente and the genuine cultural flavors of the Southwest.  New Mexico has produced another master storyteller in Rudy Apodaca."

Collected Works presents local author Josh Gonze for a discussion of his book The Streets of Santa Fe: A Walking Tour from 1880 to the Present.

What if you could step into a time machine, zip back to Santa Fe in the post-WWII era, and walk the streets of downtown?  Josh Gonze's book, and the walking tour it outlines, takes readers back in time to a period in Santa Fe's history that is remarkably overlooked: the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.   The Streets of Santa Fe describes the Plaza, lined with shops, where people bought their pajamas and gasoline, milkshakes and haircuts, and Canyon Road, winding and full of family farms and neighborhood grocers.  Prior to the 1970s, Santa Fe was a town of bohemians and shopkeepers.  There were artists but no galleries.  By the early 1980s, the chain store invasion began and downtown became a tourist mecca.  The Streets of Santa Fe seeks to preserve the colorful and illuminating memories of the town's oldest residents - memories of a recent but nearly forgotten chapter in Santa Fe's history.

Josh Gonze (rhymes with bronze), an East Coast native ith a BA in Economics and an MBA in Finance, moved to Santa Fe in 1999 and within a few years began to notice how quickly the city was changing.  Interviews with those who could recall the 1940s and 1950s in Santa Fe encouraged him to read books on local history and keep detailed notes.  The Streets of Santa Fe is the product of his passion.
